This is the season for class reunions. If you are like me, when thinking back on our days in school, we remember those teachers who influenced us.
I remember my World History teacher and homeroom teacher, Mr Cincerelli. Mr Cincerelli was a drill sergeant in the Marines. After his service, he became a teacher. Each morning we heard him climb the ancient wooden steps to our homeroom and in a booming voice, he would invite us to “find something to do” as only a drill sergeant invites his troops. Yet, we learned a great deal from Mr Cincerelli about leading an orderly life.
Another teacher fondly remembered was Mrs Wallander. Mrs Wallander wore the same suit each day. We began to think of it as her uniform and in some way she was identifying with us. Little did we know that Mrs Wallander sent her son to medical school on a Catholic school teacher salary and that her “uniform” was her way of being frugal so her son could accomplish his dream. Her choices were always for the other.
So if you’re a teacher, or if, like me, your life was greatly influenced by a teacher, you’re going to love this movie! The beautiful poem, The Heart of a Teacher, was written by Paula Fox. The combination of words, music and photographs is a “wow” that you won’t soon forget!
