I agree we need to be careful. Young children need concrete examples. They do not think in the abstract. By middle school,we need to deepen their understanding...with each age bracket that understanding is enlarged and we can speak in the abstract. We can only do so by building on lived experienced.
Thank you for your comments

We must be careful that as we teach children the Trinity we aren’t teaching them false doctrine. Many of the object lessons that are used to teach the Trinity are actually early church heresies.

When we give kids the impression that they should be able to understand everything about God we set them up for failure. No wonder they begin to doubt truth as they reach their teen years and early 20ties. We fooled them as children to think that they could understand everything – we “lied” to them.

First, let me offer you my sympathies....losing a loved one, especially your mother, creates a void, an emptiness. I hold you and yours in my prayers. Thank you for your observations about anger. As with other emotions, if misdirected, it can cause more stress! My brother, sister and I lost our mother this past November. We could be angry with God because our mother's journey was not without pain. We had to acknowledge we did the best we could and not hold any guilt or anger...it is a tough journey...yet in the end, we acknowledged God's blessings because our mother enjoys the blessings of a life well lived.

Sometimes anger comes from our sense of guilt....

If we feel anger, give it to God and expect a healing. If it becomes so irrational, then some professional help will be needed.

Thank you

Thank you for this article. I have just lost my mother, JoAnn Bode and it helps a lot.

I wanted to add that the anger part of grieving can cause problems if we allow it to turn into aggression. As you said regarding all emotions that surface during grief: "Accepting them as part of the grieving process and allowing yourself to feel what you feel is necessary for healing."

If we accept that the anger is part of grief...and that it is irrational, just an emotion that has surfaced because we have lost someone dear...then it helps us to deal with it for what it is. And to heal from it.

On the other hand, if we allow it to become aggression, we misdirect this feeling. If we direct this feeling toward another person, it can cause serious problems. This can cause a problem with a relationship of someone else that we dearly love. When will it end, if we do not accept the anger and deal with it ourselves without aiming it at others?

May you hold the peace of God within your heart,
Michael Bode

We,like Mary, are full of grace! Wow! I never would put myself in that category, and yet, if I believe in my call to Discipleship, then this presence of God, this energy impels me to be about God's mission. Quiet reflection is the way to be "re-energized"!

When we were very young, my mom and dad wanted us to understand that preparing the stable for Jesus' birth and preparing our hearts and our home were all the same thing. They cut up thin strips of beige paper and placed them in a basket next to the nativity set. Each time we did a kind deed, opted out of a "nitpick" with a sibling, or offered a prayer at meals, we could write that deed on the strip and place that "straw" in the manger. Love and kindness gave Jesus a warm place to stay.
